Winners of the Pennsylvania Pollinator Photo Challenge, hosted by the Westmoreland Pollinator Partners, will be revealed at this year’s “Monarchs, Milkweed and More” event that Penguin Court and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA) coordinate. This year’s event will be held Sunday, August 27 from 1 – 4:00 p.m. at SAMA’s Ligonier location. This is a family event with activities for all ages. A suggested donation of $10 per family is recommended and will support SAMA’s beautiful gardens, which are full of pollinators. Penguin Court will be tagging any monarch butterflies that guests net from the gardens and giving a presentation on creating a monarch waystation; the Penn State Master Gardeners of Westmoreland County will have a monarch migration game for youth; Powdermill Nature Reserve and the Climate in Rural Systems Partnership will share information on how climate change is affecting these beloved butterflies; Westmoreland Land Trust will have activities on backyard birds; and SAMA will oversee a “Monarch Wishing Tree,” while several artists will be painting plein air. Additionally, those who participated in the Monarch Waystation initiative in honor of Westmoreland County’s 250th Anniversary will be recognized and entered to win a bundle of 25 native plants grown at Penguin Court.
